Dean Younger is a landscape and portrait photographer (though he doesn’t like to limit himself) based in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. He has loved the art of photography since first picking up a camera. While he specialises in Landscapes, he has a growing passion for Portraits and is also currently working on a Fine Art project. This he sees as just another step in his photographic journey, another way of seeing through the lens and being able to tell a story through the art-form of photography.
He also likes animal photography with an emphasis on dogs, as this combines his two greatest passions, and his time is available on a volunteer basis for dog rescue. In his spare time, he likes nothing more than to get in the car and find new places to photograph. With its wealth of locations, both of sun and sand, and the beautiful hinterland, the Gold Coast region is one of his favourite areas in Australia to photograph.
This shot was taken at the Southport Sand Pumping Jetty at a little before sunrise on New Year’s Day 2017, the first sunrise of the year. It’s a nice location, but you need to get there early as it is a popular beach on summer mornings, with the early risers like fitness enthusiasts and dog walkers all regularly turning out just after sunrise.
With my camera on a sturdy tripod, I usually like to stop down a fair way to capture those nice rays from the sun and add a little length to my exposure time, but for this image I went a different way. Given that there wasn’t much cloud around and I didn’t need to set my exposure time for capturing the cloud movement, this was just perfect for a two second exposure. It softened the water just a bit, and at f11 reduced the risk of flaring with my ND filter on. You can just see some of the rays of the as yet unrisen sun, and it captures a beautiful and accessible part of the Gold Coast.
